Life insurance application filings down; ‘rollercoaster’ ride predicted

The string of three straight months of increased application activity for individually underwritten life insurance was broken in September, and an industry expert is forecasting a “rollercoaster” ride in the future.

The 3.4% slide in September not only was the worst decline in the year, but it erased most of the years gains in application activity, according to the monthly MIB Life Index. The years activity through nine months is off 0.6%, compared to the same period in 2010, despite unusual growth in the June through August numbers.

Federal Auditors Will Soon Review Health Insurance Rates in 10 States

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration will soon take over the review of health insurance rates in 10 states where it says state officials do not adequately regulate premiums for insurance sold to individuals or small businesses.

At least one state, Iowa, has protested the federal decision and asked administration officials to reconsider.

Several other states acknowledged that they lacked the power under state law to review health insurance rates. Several insurance commissioners tried and failed to get such authority from their state legislatures this year.

Starting Sept. 1, federal and state officials will begin to scrutinize proposed rate increases of more than 10 percent to determine if they are justified. Read more…

  • Licensed the U.S. distribution rights for CIP-TRAMADOL ER to Vertical Pharmaceuticals, Inc., with plans to launch the product in Q3 2011.
  • Completed a pivotal large-scale Phase III safety study of CIP-ISOTRETINOIN and disclosed positive top-line results.

Kentucky Medicaid Firms Chosen

The governor of Kentucky, Steven Beshear, has announced the new Medicaid contracts that hope to save residents a lot of money in general funds.  It’s estimated to save taxpayers about $375 million in general funds and $1.3 billion in all funds in the next three years.  Kentucky health insurance needs these savings to stay competitive and offer the right benefits to Medicaid eligible residents.
