Humana Inc., a U.S. healthcare group, will partner with Discovery Holdings Ltd., Africa’s largest medical insurance administrator, to offer clients of the U.S. company wellness and loyalty programs.
As part of the plan, Humana, based in Louisville, Kentucky, will set up a new entity in the U.S. in which Discovery will have a 25 percent stake. Humana will also buy 25 percent of The Vitality Group, Discovery’s U.S. subsidiary, the companies said in a statement today. The value of the transaction wasn’t disclosed.
The partnership will give Humana customers access to the wellness and loyalty programs designed by Discovery and provide the Johannesburg-based insurer with the opportunity to sell its incentive plans to Humana’s 10 million medical members, the companies said. Discove Read more…

I wrote in my last post about aging. It is inevitable. It cannot be avoided. So prepare now so your quality of life when you are older is the best it can be. You have to take care of yourself so you can see your grandchildren have children. Here are some other ways to age gracefully and prepare for when you are older:
- Private health insurance might not be enough. When you are old enough, you can start receiving Medicare insurance. Medicare is available for seniors age 65 and older. There are two types of Medicare insurance: Part A covers inpatient hospital costs; Part B is like typical health insurance. It is more outpatient, covering doctor’s office tests and costs. T

Florida Senators are constructing a Medicaid reform plan that would move most of the programs 3 million patients into private HMO health insurance plans. The reform plan as it is being discussed, would also dental coverage and vision coverage.
The reform plan is necessary because the Medicaid budget is spiraling out of control, currently costing about $20 Billion annually of 1/3 of the state budget.

The push is on to enroll thousands of children who previously could not get health coverage or whose parents paid much higher premiums because of their children’s pre-existing medical conditions.
Under new federal rules that took effect last fall, children with chronic health conditions cannot be denied coverage.
California went one step further: Insurers may not charge premiums more than double the rate of covering healthy children. Read more…

What do your heart and your teeth have in common?
Did you know that bad dental hygiene can lead to heart disease? An article in my local newspaper today explored the connection between hygiene and coronary health. The surprising connection is how heart disease is directly related to dental up keep.
In honor of February being Children’s Dental Health Month, it’s time to get your mouth in shape. Unless your family health insurance includes a good dental plan, you will want to pay attention. And let’s be honest a healthy mouth is good for your body and for your wallet, so you will want to pay attention anyway.
The article does state that taking really good care of your teeth will prevent any heart disease, but they suggest that those who have goo dental hygiene tend to be those who have a good overall health in general. Extra

Nearly a year ago, I addressed the issue of whether or not PPACA regulations would apply to student health insurance policies provided by colleges and universities. The language of the law was unclear on the subject, and didnt specifically require student health insurance policies to conform to the new rules.
Today, HHS has proposed additional regulations specifically aimed at student health insurance policies, in order to make sure that those plans meet the guidelines created in the PPACA.

Hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians currently face the threat of catastrophic family health care expenses from serious, unexpected injuries or illnesses, such as accidents, sports injuries, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. A new cap on out-of-pocket expenses, a key provision of the Affordable Care Act, will help those families protect both their health and their budgets.
