CT of Bath nearly lost out having premiums for a missold PPI policy refunded until he invoked name. He had switched his mortgage away from Halifax six years ago and stopped the policy when he realised that, as a self-employed hairdresser, he would never be eligible to make a claim.

Earlier this year I urged him to reclaim his wasted money. When he phoned Halifax he was asked for his PPI policy number. He no longer had this, although he did know the old mortgage number. The clerk was adamant that, without the PPI number, there was nothing the bank could do. CT insisted that I had told him he could make a claim even though he had not paid premiums since 2005.

Criminals who break data protection laws and obtain personal details by deception should face jail, MPs said today.

The MPs also welcomed the government’s commitment to ban referral fees in personal injury cases, stating that an outright ban along with jail sentences would “increase the deterrent and reduce the financial incentives for such offences”.

In September the government announced it wanted to help stem rising insurance costs by banning referral fees in personal injury claim cases.

Fronting: car insurance costs drive parents to break the law

Posted by Brianna Clark On October - 13 - 2011 No Comments »

The rocketing cost of car insurance has resulted in a growing number of parents breaking the law by falsely declaring to insurance companies that they drive their car more than their son or daughter.

The practice, called “fronting”, happens where a lower-risk, usually older, driver insures a vehicle in their name, although the main driver is higher risk. It is often used by well-meaning parents trying to save student offspring (or themselves) money.

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS), which deals with consumer complaints about financial services companies, says the number of cases has doubled to around 50 a month.

Many, it believes, are being triggered by the continuing rise in insurance premiums.

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration will soon take over the review of health insurance rates in 10 states where it says state officials do not adequately regulate premiums for insurance sold to individuals or small businesses.

At least one state, Iowa, has protested the federal decision and asked administration officials to reconsider.

Several other states acknowledged that they lacked the power under state law to review health insurance rates. Several insurance commissioners tried and failed to get such authority from their state legislatures this year.

Starting Sept. 1, federal and state officials will begin to scrutinize proposed rate increases of more than 10 percent to determine if they are justified. Read more…
